fess up/finish up

Remember a while back when I said I wasn’t starting anything new until I either finished all of my works in progress plus the Christmas stuff or January 1 came?  Its crunch time.   I’ve got 2 projects still on the needles.  The new year is approaching quickly and the startitis is kicking in – I want to start everything.  I also want to finish everything – start the new year with a clean slate and all.

Here’s where I am:

Daybreak – 26 of 40 stripes done, so I’m roughly halfway there.

Double Heelix – that’s the 2nd heel, finally done this morning, when all was quiet at home and I was well rested and heavily caffeinated.  I have whole rest of the sock and the cuff on the first one yet to do.

Of the 2, Daybreak is the one most likely to be finished.  I’m on vacation and sticking close to home until my car is out of the shop (the transmission on the non-mom mobile went while Jenni and I were on the way home from Webs on Monday).  I’m going for it – that final push to get at least one more thing done before the end of the year.

Then, its on to this.  Or this.  Or this.  Or maybe this?

As promised, pictures of the finished scarf:

Packaged up and ready to go to Foster Care to Success for the Red Scarf Project (formerly the Orphan Foundation of America):

FCS asks that scarves be finished and labeled (this site has the labels) and that you add a personal note of encouragement.  The little extras aren’t required but are a nice touch – Quotable Cards are great for the note, the washing instructions helpful and the gift card, even in a small amount, is always appreciated by the scarf recipient.  I always keep in mind how rough it can be to be a college kid – even more so when you are a college kid without parents to go home to and who has been in the foster care system for years.  FCS does so much to support these kids, with scholarships and emergency funds and other services to help them transition from the system to adulthood during their college years.  This feels like the least I can do.

So its all ready to go in the mail, even put in a package but I haven’t yet sealed it up – because there’s room for one more scarf.  The submission deadline isn’t until December 15 (FCS puts the scarves in the kids’ Valentine’s Day care packages).  I have enough yarn for another scarf.  I have an easy pattern that I could crochet.  I even picked up an extra Quotable Card this morning.  I have a trip to Alabama for work in a week, which means time to knit/crochet on the flights and during some down time.  I know I said I wouldn’t start anything new until I’d finished the Christmas knitting and all of the WIPs – or January 1 comes.  I get a buy for a good cause, right?  Still debating it but if I make good progress on the Christmas stuff between now and when I leave for my trip, I’ll go for it.

And since there is still time, guidelines for the Red Scarf Project are here.  Go for it – its a great cause to support.

Red Scarf 2011 – finished!  Unfortunately, I forgot to snap a picture before I put in a nice warm bath to soak for a while this morning.  Pics will come later – I’m just so happy another one is done! Three down, 2 FOs and 4 Christmas projects to go…

This crazy busy day-before-the-holiday is off to a good start.  Now, time to get to work, crank out still more work on my new program so that I can leave at a reasonable hour – 2 batches of homemade bread are on tap for tonight.

Have a great day!

I believe its a first for me – 2 finished projects in one day.  Saturday morning, I blocked Wisteria over coffee and Saturday night, I settled in for a quiet evening with a movie and finished my Twist Scarf.

Wisteria

Full details on Wisteria are here.  This makes the 2nd of my long standing UFOs that I’ve finished this year (the first being Oh! Canada).  I started this on January 1, 2010.  A year and 10 months of picking it up off and on and I finally have a new Malabrigo sweater.  Its a bit warm to wear it yet but it will be lovely come mid winter.  As a bonus, I ended up with 4 1/2 skeins of yarn leftover – enough to make a Leaflet cardigan.  That’s a project for this winter – not starting anything new!

Twist Scarf in Cookie

My 2nd FO of the day – a simple 2×2 rib scarf in Malabrigo Twist, in the Cookie colorway.  This scarf is proof that pooling isn’t always a bad thing!  I started out alternating skeins every 2 rows, found that it was pooling anyway and so I started over working from one ball at a time and let it do its thing.  I love the argyle-like effect that I ended up with.  Serendipity!  Like my other Twist scarf, I know this one will get lots of wear.  Its super soft and cozy.

Two of my 5 WIPs are now done.  I’ve picked up my red scarf again and started working on it and I’m determined to get through the heel on my Double Heelix socks this week.  I’m setting myself up for some mindless knitting (and finishing) while I work on Christmas projects, to take on a business trip in a couple of weeks and to help me de-stress as I go through the push to get our youth shelter open by the new year.

It feels great to have finished a couple of things – and have some pretty new pieces for my winter wardrobe!

Progress!

Not quite ready for an FO post yet, but Wisteria is on the blocking mats this morning:

Woo hoo!

On to my Twist scarf – I want to finish one more thing before I start the Christmas knitting…

Wisteria

A quick progress post – I’m *almost* there with Wisteria.  I finished the first sleeve this week and am now cruising through the stockinette part of the 2nd sleeve.  With plenty of knitting time this weekend, I’ll at least get through this part and might, just might, finish it by Sunday night…

November has arrived (way too soon) and with it, the annual round -alongs.  There’s NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month – write a first draft of a whole book in November), NaNoBloMo (National Blog Posting Month – 30 posts in 30 days) and NaNoSweMo (National Sweater Knitting Month – start and finish an adult sweater in November).  I was, as I often am, compelled to join something.  Writing a novel is out (unless you count my last post) and I have no real desire to try to force myself to post daily – nor put my readers through it.  What did appeal to me was knitting a sweater, especially with that pile of Shelter that came home from Harrisville with me (side note, did you see that Brooklyn Tweed came out with Loft, the fingering weight version of Shelter?  swoon!  I can’t wait to get my hands on it!).

Then came a reality check from my friends who gently pointed out 2 things – I have a lot of projects on the needles and a lot of work on my plate.  This caused me to fess up – there’s more on the needles than what’s in my Ravelry page (hard to deny when you have one in hand and you know Jacie’s been poking around on there).  There was a gentle suggestion that I use November to instead finish something on the needles, rather than start something new.  I couldn’t argue with that.  Let’s face it – there’s a lot of them and there’s 3 pairs of slippers to knit and felt for Christmas, along with a stocking (probably – the almost nephew doesn’t have one and I assume that I should make one).

So, I decided to do that and take it one step further.  First, I’m ‘fessing up.  All of the projects that are active on the needles came out today.  I’m not counting the really old WIPs that haven’t seen the light of day this year – they’ll get attention in due time.  Then, I’m going to work my way through as many of them as I can for the rest of the year.  With the exception of the Christmas knitting (which includes the kids’ gifts and the stocking), I’m not starting anything new until January 1 or they are all finished, whichever comes first.  I’m giving myself one other exception, for Christmas ornaments, since I haven’t replaced the 3 beaded ones that broke last year.  I’m only starting one of those if I can finish it the same day so I don’t create another WIP.

Here comes step one – ‘fessing up (what’s that saying about admitting being the first step?).

Wisteria – 12 rows left on the first sleeve, then the 2nd sleeve and its done.

Twist Scarf in Cookie – halfway done

Red Scarf for 2011, for Foster Care to Success’s annual collection.

Double Heelix Socks – further along than the picture – the toe is done.  I’m a 1/4 of the way through them.  Next step is to do that heel on the 2nd one and knit the foot, then do both cuffs.

Daybreak – barely started.

Yup, enough to give me a wee bit of agita.  I hope that was the hardest part, pulling it all out and admitting that I have 5 projects going and 3 or 4 more that need to be done by Christmas.  Stressing is not the point though.  My only goals are to make progress on the WIPs, eliminate some of them and finish what needs to be done by the holiday. I’ll post my progress here regularly.

Wish me luck!
