Woo hoo!  I won Jacie’s blog contest!

My wonderful prizes – a bag handmade by Jacie herself, 2.1 ounces of beautiful bombyx silk and a Two Tails spindle.

This one is 3-inch lignum vitae whorl on an East Indian rosewood shaft, right around an ounce.  The lignum vitae is a special wood – the grain is beautiful, the color will turn more green while left in the sun and it smells like lemons.  A feast for the senses, this one.

Thank you Jacie for this special treat!

Who can believe 3 years ago today I started this blog?  I certainly can’t.  Needless to say, its flown by.  What started as a loosely planned idea of a blog to support The Painted Sheep, has grown into an important part of my daily life.  Its become about so much more than The Painted Sheep – more about my life as a fiber artist, business owner and so often, 30-something woman going through the ups and downs of life.  This blog has turned into a place of inspiration, support, joy and sorrow.  You, my readers, have made that happen.  Its YOU I’m thankful for every day.

As a little token of my thanks, I’m having a contest.  You’re going to have to do a little bit more than just leave a comment like usual.  You see, in 3 years, I’ve written an awful lot of posts.  You need to take a guess at how many posts I’ve written as of today and leave it in the comments.  Whoever comes closest, wins.  More than one correct guess (or equally close guesses) and I’ll pick a winner at random from the correct ones.  And don’t go counting them – that’s cheating!  Take your best guess!  Entries must be received by midnight EST on Saturday, April 10.  I’ll draw a winner on Sunday morning.  I’m keeping this one short, since there’s more fun coming next week.

The prize?  This skein of Painted Sock Too in Merlot and your choice of Knitspot sock pattern from my Etsy shop to go with it.

Good luck!

You get a bit of everything today.  What can I say?  A week or so of minimal posts and lots of time on my hands…

First up, the contest winner.  This contest was so much fun!  I loved hearing your favorite Halloween memories.  And yes, you succeeded in brightening up my night a bit.  I drew a winner this morning – random.org picked number 13 (seems appropriate, right?) – Jenny it is!  Congratulations, dear friend!

It occurred to me that I didn’t share my favorite Halloween memory with you.  Looking back, I actually think last year was my favorite.  The family gathered at my brother’s house for trick or treating with the niece and nephew, who were 2 1/2 and 3 1/2 then.  Such great ages – for my nephew, he was really into the whole dressing up and trick or treating thing and went non-stop.  My niece put all together very quickly, especially after catching on to what her cousin was doing.  My brothers, sister-in-law and I took the kids out with a big group of my brother’s neighbors and their kids.  It was a great, fun group to hang out with.  The things that made it my favorite though were little moments with the kids.  After I helped my niece into her Abby Kaddaby costume, she looked down at herself and proclaimed “I’m pretty!”  Dead serious, too.  It was priceless.  Yes, she is.  And I’ll never have to worry about her self-esteem ;)   And my nephew, dressed up as a monster truck, very creatively made by brother and SIL, had his own moment while trick or treating.  The little guy got tripped up in some leaves and took a full on digger, ass over tea kettle style.  Of course, a crew of worried adults stifled the giggles rushed to help, he pulled himself up, realized he was fine, laughed and laughed and laughed – and proceeded to do it over and over again.  One of those moments where I can see he is truly my brother’s son – fearless, a great sense of adventure and thankfully, indestructible!  The kids made it a great night.

And lastly, some Ten on Tuesday.  This week’s topic was oh-so-perfect after almost a week of vegging at home.

Ten Ways to Waste Time on the Internet:

  1. Facebook – world’s biggest time suck
  2. Twitter – second only to Facebook.  thankfully, I found Tweetdeck to keep up with both at the same time.
  3. Ravelry – Its way too easy to get sucked into browsing yarns, patterns, projects, friends’ stuff and the boards.  Worse, during my time at home, I got sucked into the LSG group.  I already knew I was lazy, stupid and godless – now I’ve found my people…
  4. Googling – anything and everything
  5. Blogs – thank goodness for Google Reader, as you all are hard to keep up with
  6. Etsy – not just keeping up my own shop, but checking out all the others
  7. Knitty and Twist Collective – my favorite online knitting magazines
  8. Shopping – yarn, fiber, books, clothes – rarely buying but endless “window shopping”
  9. Netflix – online streaming pretty well saved my sanity in the last week
  10. news and political sites – my favorites are msnbc.com, Huffington Post and for my fake news fix, The Onion

With that, I’m off to work.  Horray!  I’m feeling better, not 100% yet, but much, much improved.  I’m more than ready to rejoin the world.  Never been so happy to get back to work :)

Happy Tuesday!

Happy Halloween!  This day has always been one of my favorites.  Since my nephew and niece came along, I’ve spent Halloween with the family – a big dinner, followed by getting the kids dressed up and then going trick or treating.  Back in Syracuse, I lived in a great neighborhood for trick or treating, which was also across street from the entrance to a cemetery.  Halloween was a big party, with tons of kids coming to the door and hanging out with the neighbors.  Fun no matter where I’ve been.

This year didn’t quite turn out as I had hoped.  No Halloween festivities for me – no one wants what I could be giving out this year :(    I’m laying low, still sequestered at home.  My family has promised to email me pictures of the wee ones, so I don’t miss out altogether.  Other than the innernets and occasional phone call (my voice is a real treat – doesn’t hold out for long), its up to me to make my own fun.  I haven’t had a contest in a while, so I thought now is the perfect time.

So here goes:  leave a comment on this post with your favorite Halloween memory by 11 pm EST on November 2.  The next day, I’ll pick a winner at random.  The prize?  A $25 Gift Certificate to my Etsy shop.  You get some fibery goodness and I get entertained.  Its a win-win :)

And just a quick update – I feel a little better today.  No more fever means I’m not technically contagious anymore (though I’m not taking any chances).  Unfortunately, its been a rough few days – my asthma kicked up and my breathing got bad enough for the doctor to start me on Prednisone on Friday.  Good news, its helping.  Bad news, I still feel horrible and have no energy.  And I’m bored – lots of bad TV and napping fill my days, hardly any knitting.  Sitting around is so not my style!  Here’s hoping that I’m almost on the other side of this thing.  Thanks to all of you have left well-wishes.

Have a safe and happy Halloween!  And get those contest entries in!
